WoRun - Language Learning Runner Game
WoRun is a game that combines language learning/practising apps with a popular game mechanic, the runner mechanic. Other language learning/practising apps like Duolingo, Busuu, Memrise consist of regularly repeated lessons and lack entertainment. Popular games with runner mechanic such as Subway Surfers and Temple Run are games that completely entertain the player and do not teach anything. WoRun combines both.
WoRun is a 3D endless runner game, created in Unity for Android, where players aim to collect coins while avoiding obstacles and, at the same time, gather words that match the displayed prompts. The character runs forward automatically, and players can make the character jump by swiping up, slide by swiping down, and change lanes by swiping left or right. As they progress, players must select the correct word. I created a MySQL database for the game. This database contains translations that appear in the game and the corresponding words that players need to select. Additionally, there is another database for random words that should not be selected during gameplay. To track player performance, I implemented a scoring system. Points are awarded when players collect coins and select the correct words. The player's best score progression is saved. This enables users to monitor their learning achievements and customize their gaming experience. To reinforce learning, I integrated audio feedback. Correct answers are accompanied by positive sound effects, while incorrect answers trigger negative sound effects.
The aim of the project is to merge the language learning process with the popular game mechanic endless runner, contributing to players' learning journeys, making learning enjoyable, and thereby assisting them in maintaining consistency. Additionally, the goal is to contribute to the industry in this manner and bring different multidisciplinary perspectives to games developed for the future.
